Principles of TCM

The theory in Chinese Medicine is that “qi” (pronounced CHEE) runs along pathways, or meridians, in the body. When qi is blocked or flowing improperly, pain or illness occurs. Various therapies can help to stimulate the movement of qi thus alleviating pain and restoring health.


The key principles on which TCM is based include the following:


  • Your body is an integrated whole. Along with your mind, emotions, and spirit, every structure in your body is an integral part of the whole, forming an interrelated system that is powered by life force, or “qi.”
  • You are completely connected to nature. Changes in nature are reflected in your body. TCM factors in the seasons, geography, time of day, as well as genetic inheritance, your age, and the condition of your body when considering your health issues.
  • Your body has a natural self-healing ability. Pain, illness, and disease disrupt the natural flow of qi. TCM therapies promote our body's natural healing response by bringing blood and lymph to the areas that have been stimulated, and correcting the flow of qi.
  • Prevention is the best cure. Your body constantly reveals signs about the state of your health. It’s common to ignore these signs or symptoms until something more severe develops but your TCM practitioner can interpret what your body is telling you and help keep you well.
