Cupping therapy is a non-invasive medical technique where a therapist puts special cups on your skin to create suction in order to improve circulation and promote healing. Cupping has been practiced for several millenia. Historically, these cups were made from bamboo or animal horn; today it is common to see cups made of silicone, plastic, and ceramic. Because Santee Acupuncture uses fire to create the suction, and for sanitary purposes, your experience will be with glass cups.
People seek cupping treatments for many reasons, such as pain relief in muscles, increased range of motion, improved circulation, relaxation, and even conditions such as asthma and congestion, constipation, and fertility. Cupping is similar to a deep-tissue massage, but suction is used to pull at the soft tissue instead of applying pressure onto it.
There are different cupping techniques used including flash cupping, slide cupping, and stationary cupping, depending on the condition, area of the body, and desired results. Some people develop dark circles which present but do not feel like bruising. Other risks include irritation, burns, and dizziness and nausea, but the benefits typically outweigh the risks.
Your first visit will last one hour and include intake, exam, and treatment. You will disrobe and be properly draped so that your practitioner has access to the area where cups will be applied. The cupping session will last between 10-20 minutes. Though cupping is generally believed to be safe enough to receive daily, it is the policy of Santee Acupuncture not to cup more than twice in one week, giving the body a few days to recover in between sessions.
